Search engine neutral is probably the best way to describe them – they’re not favorable or unfavorable, since they’re just a design and usability element.

Good article… I used a few quotes in your article for a new customer who asked “What is the purpose of a Favicon? How does it benefit my website?”. I Googled that question and your page came up… Everything worked out as planned. Great article btw!… I will add a link to my site as well.

Even better, why not install a photoshop plugin to allow you to export .ico files directly?!

There are plenty more out there, but I use this, you just need to ensure your image is converted to indexed colour before saving as a .ico file.

Another reason to include one is that most browsers look for one, even if it’s not specifically called in the head. So if you don’t have one a 404 error is reported on every visit, which is a waste of resources on the server and bandwidth. So on a high traffic site it’s a smart move to include one.

Partially, yes, but also because it was a random topic that came to mind that I’ve been asked about on occasion.

I agree with you, I like it too, and it’s definitely more noticeable than the last one – which now that I think about it, I can’t even remember what it looked like – so that shows you how indistinct it must have been.

I’ve never seen such a fuss over the change in a favicon icon before… I guess it’s just another example of how influential Google is!

Were you inspired to write this post by Google changing their favicon over the weekend? The new one is much more colorful and noticeable than the previous one, I like it. They posted about it on the google blog – http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2009/01/googles-new-favicon.html
