Thanks for a great breakdown of these two important functions. This will be really helpful for those wanting to learn more about web design, and also those who are getting started in becoming a web designer. These two tags are so important, but they are easy to confuse and overlook. Your description was so clear and simple. Thanks!

If your HTML tags are missing alt or title attributes, there is a Windows application called Alt&Title that will automatically add them for you.

I stumbled upon the application when I was faced with the daunting task of having to add missing title attributes to images found on a large number of web pages I had designed (because tooltips were not being displayed in IE8 and Firefox).

Instead of painstakingly adding a title attribute to each image manually, I simply used Alt&Title to do it for me. It has saved me many hours of work.

Give it a go. I hope you find it as useful as I have!

Here is the Web page promoting it...

That's a great point actually. XHTML, which is a stricter version of regular HTML, requires that you include ALT tags for your images. Before you validate the XHTML code of a website you're creating, make sure that you have those in place, otherwise you'll get a lot of errors in the validation.

It should also be noted that having alt attributes with images is required for some valid html.
